VIDEO ANALYSIS: WHEN VIDEO SURVEILLANCE BECOMES INTELLIGENT

Video surveillance has become such a common reality that it is perceived by most people as an element that is part of everyday life. We are now used to cameras that detect traffic offenses, as well as video recording systems in offices, businesses and public places. Even in the home environment, burglar alarm systems associated with video equipment are increasingly widespread.

Since the advent of the first cameras, however, a long way has been made. In fact, analog technology has two major limitations: low image quality and the need for a cable connection between video cameras and monitor or video recorder, a connection that greatly limits the range of action of the system.

The advent of digital, in addition to guaranteeing high definition images combined with ease of installation and versatility of use, has made it possible to develop the concept of  video analysis. In fact, the network connection of the video surveillance systems allows the use of software that examines the footage, automatically recognizing any critical issues. Video analysis allows different types of applications:

  • Motion detection, whereby recording begins only when a significant change in the content of the footage is detected. This application allows you to save on recording time and image storage costs;

  • Intruder detection and recognition of human faces and moving objects. This tool is very useful where activities that require the monitoring of people or vehicles are carried out;

  • Detection of abandoned or lost objects, essential for checking valuables or identifying the presence of potentially dangerous objects.

What until recently seemed like science fiction is now daily bread for those involved in security systems. This is confirmed by the fact that all the largest companies in the sector are investing in the development of increasingly performing video analysis software.
